IQ/Gifted Testing and Psychological Evaluations

People can choose to pursue an IQ/Gifted test or Psychological Evaluation for a number of reasons. These include:

  • Exploring eligibility for participation in a program, group, or school for gifted individuals.
  • Determining the presence of ADHD, a Learning Disability, Autism, or another condition that can affect school, the workplace, self-care, or personal relationships.
  • Investigating the function of concerning behavior.
  • Learning how to improve memory and executive functioning skills.
  • Gaining access to support services at school or in the community.
  • Becoming eligible for testing modifications (e.g. extended time, separate location) for standardized tests, like the SAT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, and MCAT.
  • Challenging or updating the results of a previous psychological or educational evaluation.

An IQ test or test for gifted entails approximately 90-120 minutes of standardized assessment, background interview, and behavioral observations. Scoring is usually conducted that night and results available to you the next day. Afterwards, a written report is generated with recommendations and we either meet again in person or over the phone to review the findings in greater detail. The report is sent out within 2-3 weeks and follow-up is conducted with a school or program to share the findings in advance of receiving the report, if requested. The total cost for an IQ or gifted test is $600.

A comprehensive Psychological Evaluation entails approximately 4-5 hours of direct assessment (usually split up across 2 to 4 days, based on your own availability and preference), questionnaires to be completed by family and/or school personnel (based on the concerns being evaluated), background interview, and behavioral observations. Afterwards, we meet in person or over the phone (not usually preferred due to the amount and complexity of information to be reviewed, but can be done if you wanted) approximately one week later to discuss all the findings and recommendations. A detailed written report with recommendations is completed and sent out within 3-4 weeks. If requested, follow-up can take place with a school, testing service, or government agency. The total cost for a comprehensive Psychological Evaluation can range from $1500-$2000, depending on the measures utilized.

Neuropsychological Evaluations, which traditionally delve even deeper into the functioning of the brain, can also be arranged through the office.

While insurance companies usually do not reimburse for an IQ or gifted testing, they may reimburse for a comprehensive Psychological Evaluation or Neuropsychological Evaluation. You may want to call the insurance company ahead of time to find out more. All the associated documentation for this process will be completed and sent to you along with the report.
